CAN GERMANY MAKE IT A SECOND WORLD CUP VICTORY IN JULY ?
2014 BANK OF BEIJING SHUNYI OLYMPIC PARK CABLE WAKEBOARD WORLD CUP
WORLD CUP WAKEBOARD RETURNS TO BEIJING’S SPECTACULAR SHUNYI OLYMPIC PARK VENUE ON JULY 25/27
All eyes will be on German athletes once again at the end of this month. Here is the reason. The enormous growth in the development of Wakeboard Cable Parks around the world has seen two Olympic sites already adding these facilities to their infrastructures – Beijing and Barcelona. On July 25/27, the 2014 Bank of Beijing Shunyi Olympic Park Cable Wakeboard World Cup will see the second major World Cup Stop of the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) take place at this impressive Beijing facility. Covering an area of 6.35 million square meters, it is the world’s largest.
The IWWF will also celebrate the 40th Stop of the successful World Cup series on this occasion. Organised by the Chinese Water Ski Association and sanctioned by IWWF Asia, Riders from the following 19 countries will compete: Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Republic of Korea, Netherlands, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, United Arab Emirates and USA.
One year ago, Wakeboard Riders took part in what was the inaugural competition of this Olympic Park Cable facility. On that occasion, the World Cup podium was dominated by two German athletes, Dominik Guhrs and Cosima Giemza. They will now both return to defend their titles and perhaps make this Germany’s second World Cup victory of the month !
Twenty-four year old Red Bull athlete Guhrs from Munich in southern Germany has collected a host of Wakeboard titles to date. In addition to his 2013 World Cup Shunyi gold medal, they include German National Champion and Rider of the Year, gold medal at both the Vienna Stop of WakeControl and Abu Dhabi Wake Park World Championships. The titles of twenty-three year old Giemza from Hamburg in northern Germany include German Open Ladies Champion, World Cup Gold and Silver medals at the Europe Africa Championships and the IWWF World Championships.
The 44 World Cup Riders invited to this 40th World Cup Stop at the Bank of Beijing Shunyi Olympic Park Cable Wakeboard World Cup all have Olympic ambitions. The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee has already invited the IWWF some months ago to make a presentation in St Petersburg, Russia, showing what Wakeboard could bring to the 2024 Games. IOC President Thomas Bach and his colleagues are currently reviewing changes for the future and details will be announced later this year. German athletes Dominik Guhrs and Cosima Giemza and the other Riders heading to Shunyi will no doubt be aware that competing at this Beijing Olympic site could well be a very useful experience for the future ! To confirm if Germany can win a second World Cup title this month, we will just have to wait and see.
